Here, Chris tells Nativa World about his book and reveals how becoming a victim of assault set him on a new life journey which saw his career flourish as one of the UK’s leading yoga and wellness experts…
Chris, what’s your background?
I entered the yoga and meditation space purely by chance. I was living in India in my 20’s and kept meeting people who were studying and practicing. I was inspired by them. I firstly went to Rishikesh and studied with the Bihar school, and later I studied with TKV Desikachar. Then rather dramatically, I had a very bad accident that left me with a broken neck #C2 #C3 & #C4 while on holiday in London – and lots of other serious injuries. I was attacked and because of this, I sustained the same injuries as the late Christopher Reeve. The only difference to my injuries was that my spinal column hadn’t completely severed.
I recovered using the breathing, visualization and meditation techniques that I’d learned in India to bring the intelligence back into my body. I walked out of the hospital in six weeks to the astonishment of the doctors and staff. I became a Yoga & Meditation teacher to share the gift and help others achieve optimal health and wellness.
What sets you apart from the rest?
I think that teaching yoga has become very competitive, but only in relatively recent years. I started teaching yoga and meditation when it was still a bit of a weird thing to do, and fortunately I made my name in the industry at the right time. I feel sorry for people who are just starting out. I guess my sensitivity as a teacher sets me apart from other teachers, and a strong one-to-one approach. I’ve always taught more one-on-one’s following the traditional master-pupil model of teaching. I’m able to adapt yoga to the individual rather than the individual to the yoga. This enables you to explore postures in greater depth. It also allows you to work on individual areas of resistance, alignment, and practice. I focus on building core strength and postural integrity, coordinated breath and movement and relaxation techniques that can be employed in day-to-day life.
What’s your speciality?
I don’t think that you can separate yoga, cleansing, and meditation. They’re all part of the same lifestyle choice. Yoga, cleansing, and meditation inform each other and grow out of each other. I have a truly holistic approach.
What are the body and mind benefits of your method?
My method is called MIND BODY CLEANSE and it’s unique because it’s a 360 degree natural solution to achieving optimum health and wellness, year round. My teaching method involves seasonal cleansing, therapeutic fasting, intelligent movement and the use of herbs which are all outlined in my book.

What compelled you to write Mind Body Cleanse: The 12 Day Plan to Heal Your Body and Re-Energise Your Mind?
It has been a long time coming. It joins up all the dots in my approach to helping others achieve optimal wellness. I had the opportunity of writing a pretty-style coffee table book that Instagram-fame wellness authors are currently producing in their droves. But, I wanted to write a serious book with real content. Your health is a serious business after all.
What was the book process like?
It was a real labor of love! Especially when you have to teach, run a business, answer your shareholders, manage people and everything else that you have to do.
Why is the gut important?
I’ve always known that the gut is important – it’s the seat of all health after all. The first Yogic technique that I ever did was called Shanka Prakshalana in India, where you imbibe 8 liters of warm, salty water in conjunction with systematic twisting Asanas. Shanka prakshalana purges the entire alimentary canal. Its effect is a physical release matched by an emotional release (we hold a lot of undigested rubbish in our gut). While, I don’t recommend that you do this without the guidance of a competent master – for me it was my baptism of fire, and convinced me to adopt cleansing rituals as a way of life.
You don’t have to disappear off to India or Thailand to do it (The 12-Day plan), although of course the thought of doing so is very appealing!
How can your book benefit the female business traveler?
It can certainly benefit the female business traveler because it’s condensed into a systematic and easy to follow 12-day plan, which will help heal your body and re-energize your mind. You can read the book so that you can get familiar with the evidenced-based theory that underpins the practice. Then you can check your schedule to make sure that days 7 – 9 occur in a period of relative calm for you – to most people this means a weekend.
If you can’t quite face a 12-day cleanse you can try our 3-day cleanse “3R” which comes in sachets and is easy to transport in your handbag. You could also take a sachet of “Gorgeous Greens” every day while you travel which helps strengthen the immune system, and restore pH balance and is key if you’re doing a lot of flying! Do you think there are any dangers to cleansing?
Yes, I think that the cleansing can be harmful and sometimes dangerous if not done in the right safe and structured way. Take juice cleansing for example – if you dive straight into a juice cleanse from regular metabolism, then it can do more harm than good, as it will release lots of free radicals into the body which will impact your internal tissues and organs. It’s better to incorporate a preparation period of at least 3 days that will enable you to adjust to cleansing.
