Here Vicki tells Nativa World about her makeup tutorials, beauty tips, techniques and favorite beauty products and cosmetics for creating dewy looks for businesswomen on-the-go….

Vicki, how did you become a makeup artist?

Makeup has been a passion of mine my entire life. For as long as I can remember I was always interested in makeup and anything beauty related and as a young girl I used to practice makeup looks on my friends and family whenever they would let me! While working in a professional business environment for many years, I finally made the decision to pursue my passion of makeup artistry. That was 12 years ago and I’ve never looked back. It’s my passion and I no longer feel I’m ‘going to work.’ I go out and make women look beautiful by playing with makeup and creating unique looks. It’s really a dream come true for me.

What is your signature makeup look?

I’m best known for my skin work and my no-makeup-makeup-look. That natural, dewy, glowy pretty makeup look that many brides love. I enjoy perfecting skin and I’m what you might call ‘obsessive’ about skin and making skin look real yet flawless. It’s a skill I’ve developed over the years and am always tweaking it as I continue down this journey.

Has there been a defining moment for you in your career?

I’ve won quite a few awards over the years and they are very special to me but my defining moment came many years ago when I was hired to do makeup for a mother of the bride who had a disease called Alopecia. She had no hair on her body including no eyelashes or eyebrows. I’ll never forget the look on her face when I was finished her makeup and she looked into the mirror. I had drawn in her brows that looked very natural and gave her some false lashes! She teared up and hugged me and from that moment on everything changed for me. At that moment, I realized I had the ability to change how someone felt about themselves and I’ve never taken that gift for granted since.

How do you usually work with clients?

I provide a mobile makeup and hair service whereby I go directly to my client’s home or venue of choice. It’s a truly luxurious service having someone arrive at your front door with a complete kit to beautify you. I also offer one on one private and customized makeup teaching and makeup tutorials over the web covering all ages from teens through to women in their 80’s. I cover everything from how to pick the perfect color and texture eyeshadows for your skin tone, age and eye shape to understanding how color theory plays a role in a polished makeup application. For those who are truly makeup fanatics, I share the best places to buy professional brand makeup online at a fraction of the cost of retail! I also share some of the the best kept industry secrets!

Which are your favorite makeup and hair products?

The best thing about being a freelance makeup artist is that I do not HAVE to use any particular brand of cosmetics. I use what works for my range of clientele and stock my kit with the best products from various brands both professional and retail. That said, I love any product that Make Up For Ever creates and I adore Chanel lipsticks!

What’s a good skin care and beauty regime for travel?

Women who travel for business often struggle with dry skin especially when they are traveling on airplanes. Hydrating skin during a business trip can make a big difference to how you look and feel. I suggest packing a good hydrating oil such as Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment OIl and using it every night under your regular night moisturizer. Also, remember to increase your water intake to keep your skin hydrated from the inside too!

Which beauty app do you use?

My favorite beauty app would have to be Keep Shopping.’ It’s a great place to not only buy beauty products but to purchase current fashion pieces too.

Which are your favorite Canadian cosmetic lines?

Bite Cosmetics is a Canadian brand that has created gorgeous lip products with a luxurious feel and amazing staying power!

Yaby Cosmetics is a serious professional cosmetic line from Canada that includes liquid, cream and powder foundations, eye shadows, blushes and highlighters. All very pigmented and well priced! Created and designed by Toronto senior makeup artist Liz Yu.

Face Atelier is another professional line of cosmetics from Canada. They recently launched their newest foundation product called Ultra Skin which has been receiving high praise in the industry!

Cargo Cosmetics is a high quality Canadian retail cosmetic line and their new contour eye shadow palette is gorgeous to wear with very usable colors for most women with long lasting results.

Which celebrity has got it right with their makeup?

I have always loved Jennifer Lopez’s makeup but what I love the most is that she changes her makeup look regularly. One time you’ll see her wearing a strong lip and light eye makeup while another time she’s wearing a smokey eye with nude lips. She experiments and I love that! That’s what makeup is for…to experiment and have fun. Some celebrities never change their makeup routine and they look the same no matter how many years pass by. JLo is different. Her current makeup artist (since 2006) is the talented Mary Phillips who has done an amazing job at keeping JLo on trend and current year after year. Hats off to her!

Have you any great makeup tricks?

Over the years I’ve been influenced by many different makeup artists. Some of whom have shared their tips and tricks with me. One example I was taught years ago and have adjusted it to work with my clientele is the layering of products. I often layer cream blush under airbrushed foundation and then add a layer of a sheen or strobing cream product over the foundation and under a powder blush to give a more subtle ‘glow from within’ look. Each artist has their own tricks that work for them and in the Toronto community we often share these tips and tricks with each other.

What are your makeup tips for businesswomen traveling to Toronto?

Businesswomen in Toronto are always looking for quick and effective ways to look polished and professional while also staying on trend and looking current.

Here are my top 3 tips for the busy businesswoman of Toronto:

  • Flawless Skin: You don’t need to spend an hour perfecting your skin before work. With a good quality pigmented foundation any woman can achieve even looking skin in only a couple of minutes. I recommend Face Atelier Ultra Foundation. This foundation is actually 2 products in 1! There is no need to apply a primer to your skin first when using Face Atelier Ultra Foundation as this foundation comes with a primer built right into it!
  • Full Natural Brows: Full brows are on trend right now and to create a natural looking brow I suggest combing your eyebrows upwards and outwards using a eyebrow comb. Then take a small amount of brow powder such as Smashbox Brow Tech. Choose a shade that is similar to your hair color. Then brush the powder only onto the areas of your brows that are missing hairs (I call them the ‘naked spots!’) while leaving the rest of the brow untouched and natural. Comb through one last time and you’re good to go!
  • Nothing Means Business Like a Red Lip: For that perfect red lip look no further than Bite Cosmetics. Keep your face makeup subtle and let your lips do the talking

How can a perfect and natural dewy look be achieved?

  • Prep the face well with a good moisturizer like Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre.
  • Prime with Laura Mercier Foundation Primer in Radiance. This adds a glow to the skin.
  • Apply foundation only on the areas that require coverage using a formulation such as Ken Gen Do and apply using a damp beauty blender.
  • Set the face with a light powder such as Laura Mercier translucent loose setting powder ensuring you only apply powder to the T-Zone
  • Apply a cream blush such as Tom Ford Cream Cheek Colour to the apple of the cheeks using a brush such as 148 Blending Blush Brush from Make Up Forever. Buff the cream into the cheeks using a swirling motion which creates the illusion of a natural, flushed color
  • Add Ambient Lighting Powder over the top of the cheek and blend lightly to create a soft diffuse of sheen. This gives the skin the ‘glow from within’ appearance.

Which beauty products are essentials for women on-the-go?

For women on-the-go a adding a few key products into their handbag will help keeping them looking fresh all day long:

  • Package of blotting papers such as Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets to keep your face looking oil free all day long
  • Neutral moisturizing lip stick or balm that compliments various makeup looks and clothing colors
  • Roll on perfume that is soft and fresh to help freshen you up mid afternoon
  • Nail file just in case you find yourself with a broken nail
  • Good concealer stick such a Clarin’s concealer stick to camouflage unexpected breakouts during the day
  • Clear nail polish – great for a quick fresh mani or to prevent that run in your nylons getting any worse
